Rummy is a popular card game that is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The objective of the game is to form sets or runs of cards and be the first player to get rid of all your cards.

Here are the basic rules on how to play rummy:

  1. Number of Players: Rummy can be played by 2 to 6 players.
  2. Card Values: In rummy, the cards have specific point values. Face cards (King, Queen, and Jack) are worth 10 points each, and all numbered cards carry their face value. Aces can be either 1 point or 11 points, depending on the combination they are used in.
  3. Dealing the Cards: A dealer is chosen randomly, and they distribute the cards clockwise, starting with the player to their right. Each player is dealt a specific number of cards, usually 13.
  4. Objective of the Game: The objective is to meld your cards into sets (three or four cards of the same rank but different suits) or runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit).
  5. Gameplay: The player to the left of the dealer goes first. On their turn, a player can either draw a card from the stockpile or the discard pile. After drawing, the player must choose a card from their hand to discard. The discarded card is placed face-up on the discard pile.
  6. Melding: Once a player has formed the required sets or runs in their hand, they can choose to lay them down on the table. This is called melding. Melding can be done at any time during a player’s turn.
  7. Picking Up Discarded Cards: If a player wants to pick up a card from the discard pile, they must also take all the cards above it. However, the topmost card from the discard pile cannot be picked up and discarded in the same turn.
  8. Going Out: When a player has melded all their cards into sets or runs and has no remaining cards in their hand, they can declare “Rummy” or “Go Out.” The player must then place their melds on the table for verification. If the melds are valid, the player wins the game.
  9. Scoring: The score for each player is calculated based on the cards remaining in their hand. Face cards (King, Queen, and Jack) carry 10 points each, and numbered cards carry their face value. Aces have a value of 1 point.
  10. Repeat Rounds: If there are more rounds to be played, the player to the left of the previous dealer becomes the new dealer, and the game continues.

These are the basic rules of rummy, but variations of the game may have additional rules or twists. It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the specific rules of the variant you are playing before starting a game.
